Once you get you Google AdWords campaign working most people focus on tweaking bidding and adjusting keyword matching before they look at improving their ad copy.  Here are some tips to improve your AdWords copy:

  • Ensure the copy is current.  Incorporating topical information often works well e.g. ‘Avoid this miserable Auckland weather and escape to Fiji!’
  • Focus on the benefits not the features e.g. ‘Cut your electricity costs in half’
  • Target your ad to your target audience to avoid unwanted clicks.  Words like ‘cheap’ and ‘top quality’ can help. e.g. ‘Loans for those who have been refused credit’
  • Test, measure, refine test…. always have at least two ad versions running to identify the best performer.  Once you have a clear performer, pause the poor performer and create another version to test against.
  • Attract locals.  If your business is targeted at specific regions then include these regions in your ad copy (you should also restrict your ads from showing outside your target regions). e.g. ‘Auckland-wide flower deliveries’
  • Ensure your headline captures the reader’s attention.  Try dynamic insertion (dynamically populating headlines with the user’s search terms).
  • Discounts work! Promote discounts/discount codes in ad copy. Limited time offers work well.
