Using Social Media to Rank for SEO

by admin on January 19, 2011

While many businesses are trying to get a return on their social media investment by using Facebook and Twitter to improve their awareness and drive traffic to their website few consider the ability of social media to improve their search engine rankings.

Social media can help businesses to dominate the search results with Google first page of results containing the company website, Facebook page, Twitter profile, and reviews.

Here are six tips to leverage Social Media to improve your search engine rankings:

  1. Increase your followers.  Incentivising people to ‘like’ you is a common way to build followers.
  2. Create links from your social media platforms to newly created content. For example, if you have just issued a press release, ensure you link to it from Facebook and Twitter etc. Despite ‘no follow’ operating on links from Facebook etc. it will help your content get indexed faster.
  3. Ensure your URLs and meta data is optimised. Twitter creates your page title from your username and your bio becomes the description tag. You can generate a personalised URL for Facebook too.
  4. Build a theme for your pages by ensuring your updates are in line with the company’s business you are promoting; don’t venture off-subject too often.
  5. Include keywords in your updates/posts and try to keep them at the beginning of your post. Append RT@username at the end of your tweets when retweeting
  6. Create permanent links to you social media platforms from your website

Notwithstanding the above, great content is king!  If you produce relevant posts etc. which educate, entice, entertain and engage then SEO benefits should come naturally!
