  1. If it is being built externally, ensure you have a legal contract clearly stating that you retain ownership of the website (including all code).


  2. Ensure that the development, including coding, is done in a way that future developments can be made easily.


  3. Ensure you follow a logical website build process and document key functionality requirements.


  4. Ensure that the price includes all the tracking e.g. Paid Search, Web Analytics, Affiliates.


  5. Ensure integration with internal systems is full-proof.


  6. Build a test site so you can test any changes before they are put live. Perhaps run both sites in parallel to ensure 100% duplication.

  8. Ensure that the friendly URLs remain constant between each build - to prevent lower rankings in Google / search engines.


  9. Ensure that your site map is 100% replicated.


  10. Ensure that you are either on a unique IP address on dedicated server or on a server that has minimum / non-offending sites. It may be worth paying a little extra to obtain this.


  11. Ensure that the integration of customer data is 100% full-proof - i.e. I can login / register on the new site prior to 'hand-over'. Your customer's should be able to login and access their accounts / previous orders on the new website.
