Facebook’s advertising platform allows you to place small display type ads in the right sidebar of Facebook pages and profiles.

Facebook offers an effective pay-per-click advertising platform. The benefits include:

  • Reach: over 1.5 million New Zealanders are on Facebook
  • Targeting: because people share so much information on Facebook e.g. age, marial status & interests you are able to target your advertising accordingly
  • Cost-effective: you only need to pay when someone clicks on your ad
  • Database building: it's a great way to build your fanbase; a database which you can market to (see The Snowball Effect)
  • SEO: the number of fans is widely regarded to be used as part of Google's search engine ranking algorithm

Facebook Ad Example

Targeting

As well as geographic and demographic targeting you can target based on job description and likes. Here are some examples:

  • 'Managers aged 40+living ín Auckland who are interested in Food & Wine and like Cuisine Magazine'
  • 'Males aged 35+ living in Wellington who are interested in motorcycles and like Kiwirider magazine'
  • 'Engaged couples living in NZ who are interested in weddings'
  • 'All fans of Air New Zealand & the All Blacks'

Facebook's Snowball Effect

When someone “likes” your ad or business page it will show up on their wall for all their friends to see. This is viral marketing at its best!

Consider this example:

  • Suppose you have 100 fans and you decide to spend $100 which equates to 100 clicks
  • Assume 20% who click on your ad “like” your page resulting in 20 new fans
  • Your 20 new fans all have an average of 130 friends
  • These 20 new fans you will provide a direct “referral” to all their friends: 3000 people
  • Out of those 3000 people typically 5% of people will “like” your business simply because their friends do
  • So, for your $100 investment you could generate 170 referred friends/fans
  • That's only $0.59c per fan!
