Before you rush into Social Media you should consider the following:

  • What’s the business case and expected return on investment?

  • Should you try and create your own community / social network or leverage others?

  • Do you ‘go to them’ or do they come to you? Or both?

  • Do you take your goods to the market/conversation or do you persuade them to visit your shop?

  • How far upstream in the purchase decision path do you want to play? (attention, desire, interest, action…)

  • Are you happy to be just a ‘till’?

  • Are you happy that you’re not part of the conversation, let alone control it?

  • Are you thinking hard about ‘content’ or ‘community’ as a way to market and sell better?

  • How can you cost effectively scale social media – how do you keep things personal but scale cost effectively?

  • How can you cope with the 24hr real-time shopping environment?
